Details

Only after the Olympic “Birds Nest” did it become common knowledge that the Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei, also sets new standards in architecture. The national stadium in Beijing, designed in cooperation with the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, marked the zenith of a busy phase of construction. Ai Weiwei’s interest in architecture is closely linked to his artistic and political persona. With the razing of his studio by the Chinese authorities shortly before his arrest in 2011, the prototype of an architecture that, as a form of protest, contrasted values like simplicity and respect for man and nature with China’s brutal methods of modernization was destroyed.
